Introduction

Environmental pollution refers to the decline of environmental quality due to various factors. Pollution includes air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution and etc. Now, the pollution problem is so serious that it may hinder economic development in the long run. As a result, the government is taking some measures to solve the problems. This essay focuses on air pollution, which refers to the pollution to the Earth’s atmosphere due to pollutants including particulate matter (PM) or gases (Kelly & Fussell, 2015). The essay introduces two causes of air pollution. After that, one negative effect on public health is proposed. Finally, the essay shows one solution of the problem.

The Cause of Air Pollution

In general, there are two causes of air pollution, which are the nature factor and anthropogenic factor.

Firstly, the nature factor, including volcanic activities, wildfires and so on, can cause air pollutions. These natural behaviors emit a range of toxic gases, such as sulfur and chlorine. They are beyond human control and have negative effects. Although the nature factor cannot be avoided, the scope and duration of these actions are limited (“Air Pollution Causes”, 2017).

Unlike nature factors, the anthropogenic factor is more serious. It includes the growth in the number of vehicles and improper behaviors in industrial processes. With the continuous improvement of income and living standards, people are keen on having private cars, which has made the number of motor vehicles rise sharply. In 2009, for example, in Beijing, there were over 3.3 million motor vehicles. It is pointed that vehicles account for 70% of urban pollution (Lower, Shaul, Shaul & Weaver, 2018). Gasoline used by motor vehicles can pollute the air by producing sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulate matter. Moreover, in addition to private cars, trucks and public transport are also on the rise, which can trigger air pollution. Among them, the truck can cause the most serious emissions. What is more, improper behaviors in the production process can lead to pollution. Specifically, in industrial processes, chemical spills or incineration of waste can release organic and inorganic pollutants into the air. At the same time, many factories burn coal for energy. When coal is burned, some polluting gases and particulate matter are produced. Or, in some industrial processes of construction and demolition, various building materials can pollute the air because those materials may contain plenty of chemicals (“Air Pollution Causes”, 2017).

The Effect of Air Pollution

Air pollution can have an extremely serious impact on public health. It can cause acute and chronic health problems, and then, the ultimate effect is premature death (Kelly & Fussell, 2015). First of all, studies have shown that pollutants with a gravimetric concentration of only 100-200μg/m³ can cause acute alveolar inflammation, which can lead to an increase in cardiovascular death. Besides, air pollution can result in a rapid deterioration of patients who have respiratory diseases (Seaton, Godden, MacNee & Donaldson, 1995). Next, air pollution can cause a long-term health hazard, because it can lead to some chronic diseases and increase the risk of cancers. Through a study on approximately 1.2 million adults in America, the American Cancer Society (ACS) concluded that for every 10μg/m³ increase in PM2.5 levels, the risk of lung cancer and other chronic deaths can be increased by more than 4 percent. This study has provided strong evidence that exposure to air pollution is a huge risk factor for public health (Pope III et al., 2002). It is worth mentioning that air pollution is more serious for children or teenagers, because it can cause come chronic blood diseases, which are likely to lead to death.

The Solution to Air Pollution

As air pollution can cause bad effects, governments are actively taking countermeasures. At present, air pollution is mainly caused by the excessive number of motor vehicles. Hence, one general solution to air pollution is controlling vehicles.  There are three specific ways to do this. In China, for example, major cities, like Beijing and Shanghai, have restrictions on the purchase of private cars. In Beijing, the government set a quota of 240,000 new cars in 2011. In other words, in 2011, only 240,000 cars were allowed to be purchased. People who want to buy a private car need to apply in advance and then get the qualification through a license-plate lottery. Furthermore, many areas implement an odd-even car ban policy, thus reducing daily emission and air pollution. Lastly, the government has put forward emission standards to limit high-emission vehicles, and then, electric vehicles are encouraged to enter the market (Wang et al., 2018).

Conclusion

In conclusion, air pollution is due to natural causes, such as volcanic eruptions or wildfires, and anthropogenic causes, such as the increasing numbers of cars and industrial practices. To a large extent, air pollution has bad effects on human health. It can lead to acute and chronic diseases and even death. Therefore, governments must address this problem. One solution mentioned above is restricting motor vehicles. In words, governments try to reduce air pollution by limiting the number of vehicles, setting emission standards and encouraging the production of electric vehicles. In the future, we should pay more attention to environmental problems and avoid polluting the environment further.

Interview on a Good Life

Different people have different life experiences, and therefore different understandings about what it means to have a good life. This is especially true for different generations. The lives of people from a different generation is like an unopened book. Although we exist in the same world, we may have entirely different views of it. It is thus intriguing to explore the lives of people from another generation and understand how they perceive the world. With this mission, the interview is intended to foster communication between different generations and thus gain a better understand of different values. For this project, I decided to interview my father. As the interview began to explore the more and more in-depth topics, I found myself in a state of awe because I have never seen my father from the angle of an interviewer, an outsider. And as I did, I had an entirely new understanding of and respect for the person that I love the most in the world.

China in the late 70s was just awakening from the nightmare of the Culture Revolution and the social disturbances that accompanies. In 1971, my father was born as the third child in a family, from a small city in northern China. Although his family was not rich, his parents, who were both blue-collar working class in the local factory, did the best they could to support their children’s education. He maintained his good grades and successfully enrolled in a university in Beijing when he was 19 years old. In university, my father studied electrical engineering and became an engineer after he graduated. He married my mother, who is his classmate from the same university as his, at the age of 29. They have one child, currently a college student. Currently, his family lives in Beijing and the interviewee works as a senior manager in a telecommunication carrier company.

When asked about what is the definition of a good life, the interviewee believes that a good life is about being able to appreciate the ordinary things in life. He mentioned that being born in the 1970s, instead of earlier, saved him a lot of troubles in life. When the social unrest happened in the 60s, he was not born. His elderly brother, however, was influenced by the social disturbance and did not have the education opportunities that he had to go to a university. Meanwhile, he also feels lucky not to be born in the 1980s, when people began to worry about the new round of social wealth differentiation. He is fortunate enough to experience education, career choice, buying a house, getting a family, raising a child, and investing in a society that is growing steadily and harmoniously. While the predictability of life may seem dull to some, stability and peace is the interviewee’s version of a good life.

In response to the question of how to enjoy a good life, the interviewee’s answer is to keep a younger mindset. Sometimes, he imagines himself to be in his thirties, even if he is already in his late forties. He doesn’t want to think too much about age, although he has to face it. Keeping a younger mindset helps him when he tries to understand something new, instead of keeping to his own beliefs and experience. The interviewee also mentions about keeping the feet on the ground while freeing the mind. There are responsibilities in life that he must fulfill, the role of a husband, a father, and a manager at work. Maintaining these roles sounds simple, but doing them well at the same time requires hard work. Over the years, the life of the interviewee shifted gradually, and he considers it important to embrace these changes. For example, he used to get up much later during the weekends when he was younger, but now he wakes up every day at 7 o’clock sharp. Embracing the little changes, and performing the different roles in life, to the interviewee, are ways to make a good life.

When asked whether he has a good life according to his own definition, the interviewee gave the positive answer. Unlike the youth born in the 1980s and 1990s, the interviewee considers himself in lack of idealism. When he stepped into the society, he was thinking more about practical goals of how to make money. He considers his current financial status satisfying, which is the foundation of a good life. In terms of life style, the interviewee is leaning towards a healthier life style in recent years. After entering the 40s, he gradually hated bars, parties, and business meetings that involves social drinking. Instead, he has growing interest to be close to nature. For the interviewee, the biggest satisfaction of life comes from the trips that his family makes every year. Overall, the interviewee feels content about his current life.

When asked about the key determining factors of happiness, the interviewee believes that happiness is determined more by internal factors than external factors. He defines happiness as a state of mind to make peace with the world, whatever the world is like. After rushing into the 40s, the interviewee recalled that he had done many wrong things, and took too many detours. He had always regretted it, but he can’t go back to the once innocent era. Therefore, he has learned to let go and look forward instead of backward. The interviewee understands happiness as having the hope for a better future. Without such conviction that tomorrow is a better day than today, one is not truly happy. When people are overwhelmed by the invisible pressure in society, they are eager for the love, eager to get off work every day, to have someone to eat together, to watch movies together. Everyone needs someone to share something with them. For the interview, such support come from his family. But he believes that there are other ways to achieve happiness as well.

When asked about the problems that humans must address, the interviewee came up with the issue of aging. He does not feel as strong and energetic as he did in his 30s, which worries him even though he tries not to focus on this issue. Although aging is a natural process for all human beings, everyone is on his or her own reconciling with the fact of their own aging. For the interviewee, this is an ongoing process. The interviewee turns to the traditional Buddhism teachings about life and death, and finds that people at different ages fulfill different roles. The Buddhism teaches people to endure the sufferings of life to achieve true happiness. This aligns with the weak adversity hypothesis that adversity can lead to growth. In fact, with aging, the life possibilities are not getting smaller but getting bigger. The last thing that people should do is reject who they are and refuse the natural changes in their lives. Instead of focusing on what is lost and the “cannot” s, people should focus more on what is gained with the years, and their increasing openness of the mind.

Regarding happiness, the interviewee believes that another crisis that human beings face is the loss of spirituality. As of today, modern civilization has created a very rich material life on the one hand, but at the same time, it has also exposed people to many new crises – even as the material is getting richer, knowledge is increasing, and the level of culture is getting higher, but we are less and less able to be happy. Modern civilization basically does not attach importance to the inner enrichment. Because the direction is wrong, the end can only be empty-handed and defeated. The interviewee gives the example about why poor people with poor material conditions have a higher sense of well-being. Because most of them live in remote and closed places, there are no rich people around, there is very little information about the outside world. For them, it is thus very comfortable with the status quo, and easy to have happiness. If there is no external shock, this happiness can last until eternity. However, if these people walk out of their original life circle, or see more advertisements, and know what the life of the rich is like, they will be envious, jealous, and indignant, thus losing their original happiness. In response, humans must channel their spirituality and keep in touch with the nature, instead of being lost in the pursuit for material life.

Overall, the interviewee has highlighted family, inner peace, and spirituality as the most important elements for happiness. The experience of the interview is valuable for me as well because it shows the different way happiness is perceived by my father. For me, I consider happiness to be something obtained from more experience of nice things in life. For my father, it is about being content with what’s provided by the life. The comparison between the generational difference may be explained by the course theory that above a certain monetary threshold, increase in money won’t lead to significant increases in the sense of happiness. This is further elaborated by the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which shows that once our needs are met, our happiness depend on non-material factors, such as the level of maturity, family, and passion for the career achievements. In seeking spirituality, as suggested by the interviewee, human beings may turn to nature and religion to seek the good life that is independent from material conditions.

Criticism of Zanele Muholi’s Exhibition

Criticism of Zanele Muholis Exhibition

Zanele Muholi is an African photographer whose self-proclaimed mission is “to rewrite a Black queer and trans visual history of South Africa for the world to know of our resistance and existence at the height of hate crimes in South Africa and beyond”. Based on this, it is not hard to find that she has really contributed a lot to the destiny of African women and many of her works can help deliver her mission as well, which will be elaborated on by involving her exhibition that we have visited called Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness Curated by Renee Mussai from September 14, 2018 to December 8, 2018.

First and foremost, the black wall with white words on it in the exhibition makes it easy to read. And the black and white background fits in quite well with the works so as to make the entire exhibition a whole. At the same time, the floor is so bright that the works on the wall as well have shadows in the floor. In this way, the audience tends to appreciate those works twice.

And then what I would like to talk about is that most of the works exhibited are the self-portraits of black women, which may be related to her mission to help those black women. As a matter of fact, those self-portraits reflect the journey, possibilities and self-image of a black woman in today’s society. Through those self-portraits, Zanele Muhol’s radical statements about identity, race and resistance can be seen as a direct response to contemporary and historical racism. Or maybe it can be put in another way that all these self-portraits can be seen as the weapons for those black women to fight against the unequal treatment that they have received.

Moreover, many of the works are exhibited quite close to one another on the same wall, which makes it more shocking for the audience when they see the various monographs at the same time. In this way, the audience can know about the history of black women and rethink what history is all about, leading to the protection of those black women to some extent. As a matter of fact, those works provides me a heavy feeling and I am really sympathetic for those black women. What is the most impressive is the eyes of those black women and they seem to talk about a series of sufferings that the black women have experienced in the past, which strengthens my heavy mood. According to this, it is obvious that Zanele Muholi is effective in protecting a large majority of black women.

Last but not the least, what will be mentioned is that some black women directly lie down in the works, which definitely draws the attention of the audience because the audience would like to figure out why Zanele Muholi would like to portray the black women on the bed without their face identified. Maybe Zanele Muholi would like to use the lying woman as the representation of all black women.

Jews were inevitably discriminated against culturally and institutionally

During the central Middle Ages, the Catholic church defined its policy towards the Jews. As a social minority group that had religious practices different from the mainstream, it was inevitable for the Jews to be discriminated both culturally and institutionally. From the cultural and religious perspective, Christians believed that Judah, who betrayed Jesus, was a Jew. This was the origin of the evil and dishonest stereotype against Jews. In return, Judaism was a Henotheism religion that did not believe in the notions of heaven, hell, or Jesus being the savior of the world. These ideological differences led to the further divergence among the two.

Institutional discrimination against Jews were equally severe in Europe. Christianity was the dominant religion in Europe, and it infiltrated the political sector as well. This was the main reason why Jews were considered politically inferior citizens. Although Judaism was permitted, Jews were not allowed to hold official positions. In the 13th century, Jews were also required to wear a badge, a cap, or distinguishable clothing that helped others identify them. It was not common for Jews to mingle with Christians because they were discriminated against. Therefore, Jews Medieval Europe commonly lived only in designated areas of the town.

Unable to participate in the more “honorable” positions, Jews became business persons to earn a living. Many entered the highly profitable moneylending business. This alarmed the officials again, fearing that the Jews may accumulate wealth and power above Christendom. Moneylending was thus criticized as a sin for Christians, despite the fact that moneylending activities contributed greatly to the thriving economy. Legislations were created and enforces that specifically targeted Jews. Eventually, Jews in England and France were expelled in 1290 and 1306 respectively. Germany and Austria followed in the 14th century. Centuries of ideological divide finally led to racial hatred and violence on the mass scale.

Critical Reflection

In the article “who lost Russia (this time)? Vladimir Putin” written by Catherine Stoner and Michael McFaul, the author tries to discuss why Russia entered the current situation, its economy stagnated and international relations collapsed. The author refutes the view that the west, especially the United States, should be responsible for the Russian problem, and holds that Putin himself should be responsible for Russia’s domestic and international failures. Before analyzing the domestic situation in Russia during and after the reset era, the two authors support their argument by attacking “too little” and “too much” allegations against the United States respectively. Most of their arguments are based on a series of statements of international events and policies, trying to establish the correlation between them.

Russia US relations have always been complex and involve many factors. Therefore, it is difficult to establish a simple causal relationship between different events. Since relations between countries often involve multiple sectors, it is not uncommon for political, cultural and economic fields to be separated. However, the author of this article attempts to simplify the relationship between the United States and Russia into good or bad. This is both inaccurate and misleading to readers. For example, the author believes that the expansion of NATO is not important to Russia, because it is followed by an era of cooperation (P. 172). These events took place in the context of the reset era and are completely inappropriate for the current problem. In peacetime, NATO’s expansion can be regarded as a neutral and insignificant act, but the interpretation in recent years is completely different.

The article also mentioned Russian propaganda many times, which may be wrong. There is no clear definition of propaganda, and the author does not distinguish the state propaganda machine during the cold war from the current state review and regulation in Russia. Obviously, the two are completely different, but the author adopts the definition of publicity in the Soviet era and applies it to the modern context (P. 178). This is a typical stereotype, judged from a Western perspective. In fact, the mass media in the United States are often biased and strongly subjective in politics. For example, three references come from CNN International, a news organization known for its anti Russian tendencies.

Some contradictions are also observed in the article. Although the author tries to refute any responsibility of the United States for the current Russian problems, they also claim that “some U.S. foreign policy decisions in the 1990s and early 21st century also triggered tensions in U.S. – Russian Relations (P. 170).” However, they did not mention the details that triggered foreign policy. In the whole article, the author adopts a subjective tone to attack Putin and defend the United States in an almost personal way. Negative and emotional words such as corruption, undemocratic, belligerent, poor performance, autocracy, anti Americanism, anti liberalism, radical nationalism and aggression (pp. 167-169) are used to describe Putin and the Russian government, encourage stereotypes and further reduce the objectivity of the article. At the end of the article, the author suggests to continue to implement tougher sanctions against Russia rather than taking more constructive and mitigation measures. This makes readers question their writing motivation.

There are two reasons for wumart’s weak competitiveness

There are two reasons for wumart’s weak competitiveness

Conclusion:

We can see that the causes leading Wumart to be weak competiveness are two aspects. First and the most important one, Wumart carries out a pure strategy which focus on home market, Beijing and refuses to expand its target market before establishing the leadership in its home market. Obviously, it must limit Wumart’s development. The further discussion points out that lack of sufficient funding, talents and other resources is the reason that hinders Wumanrt’s expansion. Based on it, it is suggested for Wumart to achieve expansion by commercial financing, franchising, marketing mix and remaining cost-leadership strategy.

Besides, the existing rivals eliminates Wumart’s competitiveness. Many famous retail giants like Sun Art and Wal-mark have expanded in all China with the strong financial capabilities and long-term commitment to China. Besides, the service and customer experience from them is also better than Wumart. According to this situation, it is suggested for Wumart to find out what specific aspects of service should be improved by generating questionnaire survey.

Last, the substitute of e-commerce like Alibaba and JingDong put threat to Wumart. So it is recommended for Wumart to establish online stores to expand its market share.

Critical thinking:

Although we have come up with several recommendations for Wumart’s development, it is also necessary to consider the feasibility and disadvantages of above plan. First, the expansion plan for Wumart will be costly and may take a long time. The price of land in China is up increasingly and lots of favorable area have been occupied by its rivals. If Wumart choose to franchise its operation, the supervision of product quality and service should be controlled seriously. Or the Wumart’s brand image will be damaged by the poor alliance business.

Secondly, it is difficult to guarantee the validity of questionnaire. Customers today are lack of patience to fulfill the questionnaires and the outcome may be optional even though it is fulfilled. If there is too much inaccuracy in the outcome of questionnaire survey, it will provide a wrong guide for Wumart’s improvement.

Last, establishing the online store is also a challenge for Wumart. Wumart is lack of experience in this field. It will take time and resource to find out the proper operation mode for Wumart.

A Republic in Tatters

After 1894, the presidency of the Republic was replaced by the oligarchy of the coffee plantation from Sao Paulo to Minas Gerais. This policy is called “Café com leite”. The presidential and governor elections are supported by oligarchy to ensure that some candidates are elected. They use the power to control people as a repayment for support. From 1893 to 1926, movements of civilians and soldiers shocked the country. The military movement originated in the army and the Navy’s low-level military corps, such as War of Canudos and the Contestado War, usually led by Messianic leaders, who were dissatisfied with the regime, calling for the democratic change. In the 1930s, with world economic recession followed by coups, the “Café com leite” suffered a painful blow, the politics enter into a chaos, which needs people like Getúlio Vargas to have power and deal with such chaos.

The impact of microplastics on Marine ecology

The impact of microplastics on Marine ecology

The 21st century is the ocean century. As the ocean becomes a haven for human waste, a bigger environmental problem looms — what to do about the ecological damage. Plastic was one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, but with the extensive use of plastic products, plastic waste gradually became a burden of economic development and environmental protection. The concept of “microplastics” was first proposed in the UK in 2004, and the results of the testing of microplastics in the world’s oceans have also alarmed and threatened humans. From existing observation and understanding of the micro plastic, data collection and analysis of micro plastic water concentration, although does not draw micro plastic threat to human survival and development degree of certainty, but in view of the present serious environmental problems, put forward from the source to reduce pollution, the development of circular economy, perfect the system of public participation methods to relieve the micro plastic to further deterioration of the Marine ecological measures.

Microplastics, as the name suggests, are tiny plastics. There is no accurate definition of microplastics in academic circles, but it is generally regarded as plastic fiber, particle size less than 5mm, or thin film, which is figuratively described as “PM2.5” in the ocean. The important components of microplastics are low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene. According to the particle size of microplastics, they can be divided into large microplastics and small microplastics. Small microplastics have attracted more attention due to their larger surface area and stronger mobility.

The sources of microplastics are complex and extensive. Household garbage is the main source, the realization of scrub, exfoliation and other deep cleaning of daily chemicals often contain a lot of microplastics, including toothpaste, facial milk, contact lenses also contain microplastics. The waste water generated by washing fiber clothes in the washing machine contains a lot of microplastics, which will flow into the water body along with the washing waste water and eventually enter the ocean. In terms of land source, the residual plastic waste of human activities on the beach will be weathered and fission under natural conditions to form microplastics, and the Marine fishing tools will be decomposed into microplastics by seawater erosion.

Microplastics are widely distributed. Using the statistical method of the law of large Numbers, a large number of studies show that the probability of microplastics appearing in samples is 100%. In 2017, China discovered microplastics in organisms captured by its manned submersible jiaolong at a depth of 4500m in the ocean. Foreign researchers detected microplastics in seals in the Antarctic subarchipelago. Microplastics have also been found in freshwater lakes, arctic sea ice and deep in the Pacific Ocean. Not only that, the researchers found that microplastics also exist in living organisms, mineral water, edible salt, human feces and other carriers. Microplastics can be said to be all over the world, need to arouse human attention.

Microplastics have been detected at any level of water. The influence of microplastics on water body cannot be ignored. According to the current model, microplastics will cover the sunlight on the surface of water body, affect the photosynthesis of algae in the ocean, and reduce the self-purification ability of Marine water body. In the deep water body, the composition of seawater becomes complex and the biological environment becomes harsh. While bringing physical pollution, microplastics may also bring compound pollution. Due to its strong hydrophobicity and other characteristics, during the migration process, it can adsorb POPs, heavy metals and other harmful substances in the ocean. Through material circulation, it may cause pollution to living things.

Microplastics are enriched, which can affect the spawning amount and reproductive ability of aquatic organisms. Ranwen conducted experiments with oysters through sampling analysis, and found that the average uptake rate of microplastics in oyster samples was 86.38%, and the range was 73.91% ~ 95.65%. Although there are experimental variables of microplastics with different particle sizes at different stations, from the objective data, microplastics become sediments, which will be enriched and permeated in organisms and affect the development and growth of organisms. Due to the biological network, the organisms at the top of the food chain are more likely to be affected by the accumulation of toxins. Birds and mammals that like aquatic life will be affected more and more.

The existence of a large number of microplastics in the ocean will pose an increasing threat to Marine life. The government attaches importance to Marine ecological protection and invests more money in Marine environmental protection. From 2013 to 2018, plastic waste in China accounted for more than 70 percent of Marine garbage. Because plastic is hard to degrade and waste emissions continue to increase, the amount of microplastics in the ocean is higher and higher, the investment of capital and manpower will be more and more. However, the existing technology is not efficient and professional in monitoring microplastics, which leads to many difficulties in research.

With daphnia magna or algae as test subjects, a large number of scholars studied the influence of microplastics on the toxicity of aquatic organisms by selecting polyethylene, the most widely used microplastics, and analyzed the potential risks of microplastics in water environment through the enrichment degree of PE in microorganisms. Jia jing tested daphnia magna under PE particles of particle size of 10 ~ 20 micus under polyethylene test solution of exposure concentration of 25mg/L, namely 5×104particles/ml. The results showed that the maximum particle intake of daphnia magna was achieved at 1h exposure, and the particle number was stable at 61-91particles /ml as the exposure time prolonged. It was also found that daphnia magna could rapidly absorb and remove polyethylene particles. Ma et al. found that the 48-ec50 of 50nm microplastics to daphnia magna was 15.13mg/L, and other micron plastic particles could enter into daphnia magna and could also be discharged spontaneously without physical injury. At present, experiments on microplastics acting alone on test organisms have shown that without interaction with other organic pollutants, the toxicity effect of microplastics is minimal, and the growth of organisms is inhibited only when the concentration is as high as 25mg/L. But the lab’s dose goes well beyond the amount of microplastics in natural water. The environmental risks of microplastics have been exaggerated, and low exposure concentrations of microplastics do not appear to have significant risks in current experiments. Secondly, studies on the combined toxicity effects of microplastics and organic pollutants have gradually become the focus of attention. Yin cen found through experiments that, compared with single microplastics, the toxicity of polystyrene combined with organic compounds increased, and with the increase of PS concentration, the toxicity to daphnia magna increased.

China is the world’s largest user of plastic, accounting for one fourth of the world’s total output. At the same time, China also produces the most Marine plastic waste in the world, emitting about 2.4 million tons of Marine plastic waste every year, accounting for about one third of the global total. Plastic products have a large production capacity, short service life, and the recycling and treatment mechanism after abandonment is basically not perfect. Because microplastics is a new topic in recent years, the corresponding regulations and systems have not been determined. Improve the detection technology is the key point, first of all, we must strengthen the research by the representative of the sample, and second, to establish a set of test analysis of samples from sampling and pretreatment to the whole process of standardized operating procedures, develop more powerful library retrieval algorithm, improve the efficiency and accuracy of detection operation, scientific, and finally to provide a more detailed analysis of nano plastic method, break analysis detection based on simple counting statistics.

Above all, advocate circular economy, follow 5R principle. Circular economy is essentially a kind of ecological economy. We should make efficient and circular use of resources according to the principle of “reduction, reuse and recycling”, and make a kind of feedback process, which is different from the one-way flow of traditional economy.

Next, must diversity manages. The ocean is a circular, large and global system that needs effective governance through coordination and cooperation among multiple parties. In signing multilateral environmental agreements, China and developed countries should work together to protect the Marine environment. We should put forward the view that those who are capable should bear more responsibility, and polluters should be treated first. At the same time in the unwritten provisions of their own commitment to regional coordination to solve the problem of Marine plastic waste. The state and government have been major players in reducing plastic pollution. China does not have a special Marine garbage bill. It can improve relevant laws to clarify the responsibility and obligation of the state, local and individual for plastic pollution and issue corresponding measures. According to the actual situation, there is no need to formulate a law and regulation to restrict microplastics, and supplementary provisions can be added through relevant laws.

Finally, the public participation system should be improved. Compared with ordinary pollutants, the public has little understanding of microplastics. In the measures related to microplastics, citizens are encouraged to actively express their opinions, enhance their awareness and increase their participation. Through the organization of large-scale publicity and education activities, improve public awareness of microplastics, change the coastal people’s excessive use of plastic products and litter plastic products, advocate the general public to refuse to use any products containing “microplastics”.

First, through the civil society, to achieve the bottom-up reduction of Marine pollution control effect. Germany’s dual-track recycling system is a good example. On the issue of Marine plastic waste, different classes represent different positions and can adopt different approaches and ideologies. Community groups or ngos can have different impacts on governance, which may change government regulations and industry policies. In modern society, it is obviously impractical not to use plastics. What can be done is to change the use of plastics from pre-production to post-production. The production of degradable plastic products or use other substances instead, for example, in the selection of packaging, try to use paper materials, at the same time, after the use of classification treatment, increase its recycling efforts. All plastic waste must be treated and reused in terms of matter and energy.

Secondly, reduce plastic waste at source by means of market measures through corporate responsibility. Corporate society is responsible for the r&d, sales and life cycle of plastic products. Companies should consider the sustainable use of plastic packaging and products as part of their corporate social responsibility. In order to establish a good corporate image, packaging materials can be adjusted and new technologies can be developed to achieve recycling and reuse.

Finally, reduce microplastic pollution through public groups themselves. Citizens know little about microplastics, but stay on the concept of plastic waste. Most of them do not know the existence of “microplastics” and do not pay attention to the harm brought by plastics. Consumers are accustomed to using plastic products and have low awareness of environmental protection. They will unconsciously produce more plastic wastes in life, which will bring pressure to the environment. In daily habits, consumers consciously resist the invasion of microplastics and improve their environmental quality. For example, reduce the use of disposable plastic, own environmentally friendly chopsticks, refuse to use disposable tableware; Use a cloth bag or paper bag when traveling to shopping; When buying clothes, try to choose cotton, hemp, silk and other natural materials; When washing clothes, do not overuse detergent and softener.

The problem of Marine plastics is increasingly prominent and has been paid attention by more and more scholars. For microplastics, the global concern is not only in the level of scientific research, but also extends to the environment, resources, economy, politics and other aspects. The United Nations environment conference listed microplastics as one of the major global environmental issues in 2016. Microplastics pose a potential threat to Marine life and are also involved in the governance of terrestrial and Marine macrocyclic ecosystems. At present, most people believe that microplastics will also cause harm to human body, and it is urgent to curb it. However, there is no sufficient theory and data to standardize microplastics, which makes it impossible to compare and evaluate the impact of microplastics, and only bold conjecture can be put forward. At the same time, it is not scientific to talk about toxicity without dose. Therefore, before making clear how much threat microplastics pose to human body, we should treat microplastics rationally and prove the fact through scientific research. What can be done now is to make bold assumptions based on the existing inference, minimize the generation of microplastics, prevent the generation of microplastics from the source, and protect the Marine environment and Marine ecology.

kind of agile framework

Hello, everyone! Today I would like to talk something about serum, one specific kind of agile framework.

And I would like to introduce serum to you from these six aspects and hope you guys can all know more about it from my presentation. The first aspect is what is scrum, followed by the scrum framework. And then comes the third aspect scrum artifacts. The fourth is the scrum values. The fifth one is the roles of the scrum team. The last aspect is the scrum events.

Concerning the part what is scrum, what has to be pointed out is that scrum is a better way of building software. And it can be embodied via two aspects, the first one is that scrum is a control and management process that cuts through complexity to focus on building software that meets business needs. And the second is that scrum is a simple framework for effective team collaboration on complex software projects.

The photo can be seen as a scrum framework and several parts are included in this photo, such as product backlog, sprint planning, sprint backlog, scrum team, daily scrum, sprint review, increment, sprint retrospective and so on.

When it comes to the scrum artifacts, what has to be mentioned is the below few ones. They are the product backlog, monitoring progress towards a goal, sprint backlog, monitoring sprint progress, increment, definition of “done”.

Here is the scrum values part. The scrum values mainly include courage, focus, commitment, respect and openness. Courage means that scrum team members have courage to do the right thing and work on tough problems. Focus means that everyone focuses on the work of the Sprint and the goals of the Scrum Team. Commitment means that personally commit achieving the goals of the scrum team. Respect refers to the fact that scrum team members respect each other to be capable, independent adults. As for the openness part, it means that the scrum team and its stakeholders agree to be open about all the work and the challenges with performing the work.

Concerning the roles of the scrum team, there are three important parts to mention, a product owner, the development team and a scrum master. These three parts can be seen from this photo. Generally speaking, scrum teams are cross-functional and self-organizing so that they can help optimize creativity, flexibility and productivity.

As for the last part the scrum events, they can be divided into the following ones: sprint, sprint planning, daily scrum, sprint review, sprint retrospective. Here the sprint planning means a team planning meeting that decides what to finish in the coming sprint. And daily scrum is usually a 15-minute mini-meeting for the software team to sync. And the sprint retrospective means a review of what did and didn’t go well with actions to make the next sprint better.

So far, I have given a brief introduction about scrum from several different aspects. Have you learned something from within? And that’s all about my today’s presentation. Thanks for your attention.

The role of e-commerce in Tourism

The role of e-commerce in Tourism

Introduction

According to Keith Blois, (2003), in recent years, increasing numbers of businesses have been using the Internet in their marketing efforts. The Internet is unique because it is both a market and a medium. This means that it can efficiently assume a multi-channel role by serving as a computer-mediated market in which buyers and sellers access each other, and as a medium to conduct and execute business functions such as marketing, sales, and distribution.

Many e-commerce principles were pioneered by the travel industry. These include the first business-to-business electronic information exchange and industry-wide electronic marketplace. This environment provided unprecedented opportunity for operations research (OR) modeling. Travel companies continue to derive billions of dollars annually from these and derivative models. The availability of reliable, low-cost communications via the Internet is not only providing new modeling challenges within the travel industry, but it is also providing similar opportunities in other industries [1]. Tourism industry is one of the most competitive industries within the economic environment. Within industry’s boundaries actors have more or less recently and with significantly different patterns of action undertaken efforts to achieve an integration of the internet platform and its applications. In this section, we explore the effects of electronic commerce and its potential for competitive advantage for airline industry by using Michael Porter’s seminar work on industry analysis as a framework.

Website Comparison

The moment I visit the Travel city site -the first page gives me the impression that my country, Sultanate of Oman is not there in listed? And I don’t like it that my country is not listed here. Moving in to the website with this sad feeling in mind that my country is not listed we go ahead to log in to one of the global sites as they say, the nearest country, and the company wants to say too many things in one go to the customers and this is something that is difficult to digest for the first time visitors. The first-timer is very confused to be able to relate to all the features in the website. Though the regional flavor and link through the local site helps it is difficult to do a very high level of localization of the content to cater to all the segments of the market

The look and feel of this website is a lot cleaner than other travel companies website for instance in Travel city.

The most important feature that this website it that most of the commonly used menus are neatly tucked inside the main menus and just on the movement of the mouse they unfold in to the options. This is a very good feature that helps maintain the clean looks and still does not compromise on the functionality.

This Polaris group company that is selling the HR software is using the website more for servicing functionalities

The overall framework:

Generating demand

Ordering

Fulfillment

Processing payments

Service and support

Security

Community

Regardless of which business model travel companies adopt, to be successful, travel companies need to understand how the Web and e-commerce affects their business [2]. Travel companies need to develop an overall strategy covering: strategic management, IT infrastructure, design, content, e-commerce systems, marketing and customer service. Travel companies also need to be creative and entrepreneurial. As every entrepreneur knows however, you will only be truly successful if you provide genuine value to your customers and solve a problem for them. As it is evident from the above list that it’s easy to navigate through the website by following the links. It’s user friendly and the home page of the airlines gives a glance of the services provided by them and the beautiful destinations and the activities which can be performed. It also gives the information about the hotels and resorts in each destination. All the document or equipments requirement for all the situations is also mentioned in the website e.g. when traveling with pet, traveling with children, baggage rules etc. Over all it gives every possible information to the passengers they might need to make their travel plan and during their stay at various destinations.

Sources of Competitive Advantage

Travel companies do conform to those which Porter describes: Cost Leadership, Differentiation and Focus. The proposition is that travel companies that can successfully work in one of these areas will be able to establish and sustain a competitive advantage.

§ Cost Leadership

Travel companies can generate significant cost savings by sending tickets, newsletters, quotes, and other documents via Internet, rather than by post or facsimile. Travel companies can use Web site to publish – in a cost-effective way – public domain documents such as annual reports, product brochures, positions vacant, contact details and other important Travel companies’ information. Travel companies can save on the cost of running “bricks and mortar” outlets and can reach global markets without having to develop a physical global distribution network. Most importantly, Travel companies can save on customer service costs by enabling customers to serve themselves.

One of the American Travel companies CEO said that the Web site is playing a major role in mitigating the rise in unit costs affected by high fuel prices. It’s 10 times cheaper to deliver to customers through the online service than through a travel company’s agent and costs 5 times less than using travel companies’s own reservation staff. The booking cost per passenger online is well under $1, and is scaling down even further. He said Internet use by passengers was helping the carrier keep fares at low discount levels [4].

Massive investment in both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-customer (B2C) information systems is expected to translate into important cost savings in procurement, sales, billing and other support activities. The travel companies’s fully automatic ordering system, for example, should reduce order processing costs by 90%. [5].

§ Differentiation

E-ticketing the issue of a booking code at the conclusion online transition that replaces the traditional travel companies’ ticket. E-ticketing seems to be a ‘win-win’ solution for the travel companies business. It offers the travel companies the chance to make considerable savings in both trade terms as well as in invoicing and internal accountancy procedures. Moreover, it helps to fight the downward profit spiral that has affected the industry for years. Secondly, it is very attractive to customers, who may benefit from a service offer both technologically advanced and of high intrinsic value.

§ Focus

The travel industry gives us a perfect example of successful Focus strategies – that is the so-called “Integrated Operators” of the travel business. FedEx, the integrated cargo carrier, was the pioneer. Having developed a very efficient and fully computerized system for tracking individual parcels anywhere on its network it took the next logical step. In 1994, through its website, it allowed its customers to book and pay for its services without restriction via the Internet [6].

The e-Commerce infrastructure developed by travel companies allows collection and central storage of sales and marketing data. Travel companies use this data to drive decision support tools for planning and marketing.

§ The Business Theories and concepts:

The old pillars and new meanings

The Laudon and Traver framework 2005 is very elaborate explaining the different pillars that have contributed to the development of the E-Commerce framework.

This framework at the very top of the list has E-Commerce application that can be used for the development of businesses in the future. These applications may seem at the outset like out of a science fiction book but are indeed realities.

The disintermediation and Reintermediation

The travel agents for example it was believed that will lose their jobs when more people are interested on online business but interestingly the use of these web-enabled features have only increased the use and conveniences of these businesses.

For example two of the three websites that have been taken up for analysis by our group are Travel websites. These are supposed to wipe out the businesses of the intermediary called the travel agent but interestingly, these have added to the convenience of the travel agent hence creating a new intermediary.

The Grover V and J Teng (2001) model of the infomediaries and information flow model gives a more clear idea about the various channels that carry information between the buyers/sellers and the infomediaries.

The Themes:

Hence the themes that came up to us were the B2C models and we were interested in looking specifically at the travel related websites. There was one website travel that we could not get an approval for but the group was happy to consider the business model of B2C

B2C:

The group was of a very uniform opinion that the websites have to be B2B only since some of the data that was spoken about were like $ 250 billion revenue in 2005 from B2B as against 6.3 trillion in B2C. Although the difference is huge the group came to a strong consensus that the gap will be bridged and it will be worth pursuing with all the hopes for new business models in the future happening in the B2C segment rather than the B2C segment.

The death of the Physical travel agent or the focus on creation of new intermediaries

Considering the new intermediaries that are being evolved because of the e-business it is was discussed if the websites will wipe away the travel agent.

But the discussion pointed in the direction of all websites have been playing a supportive roles in the B2C front and the travel agent themselves are using these websites to help customers and give them a better service.

The Adrenalin.com website that sells software has been using the site to reach out to the resellers as well. In a business where there is a very high connectivity on the internet, this is a unique feature that this company is using it build customer loyalty as well as expand the channel of distribution.
